Goodmores, 3West Site Manager wins top award for house building quality

The South West’s best site managers have been recognised for achieving the highest standards in house building after winning the most highly regarded competition in the industry.

Organised by the National House Building Council (NHBC), the UK’s leading new homes warranty and insurance provider, the prestigious Pride in the Job Awards 2023, crowned Ian Edgcumbe of 3West its Regional AND Seal of Excellence winner for his work at Goodmores in the Small Builder category.

Held at Bristol on 8th September, 2023, the NHBC Pride in the Job Awards 2023 also celebrated 16 further site managers from across the region who were awarded an NHBC Pride in the Job Seal of Excellence after they gained a Quality Award in the first round of the competition in June.

Now in its 43rd year, judging for the NHBC Pride in the Job Awards is rigorous, with each site manager assessed across six key areas: consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety.

The flagship competition has three categories for different sized businesses: small, medium and large house builders, plus a multi-storey category where site managers are working on projects up to seven storeys for multiple occupancy and finally the high-rise category for multiple occupancy projects over seven storeys.

Commenting on the Awards, Steve Wood, Chief Executive, NHBC said: “For more than four decades, Pride in the Job has underpinned NHBC’s purpose of raising standards in house building.  The competition recognises the best site managers in the UK, showcasing best practice and rewarding excellence.  We are celebrating the vital role site managers play in ensuring new homes are delivered on time, on safe sites and to exacting construction quality standards.

“NHBC’s Pride in the Job Awards are an important part of our work to help homeowners by driving improvements in construction quality.  We believe the calibre of the site manager and the way they inspire their site team have the greatest influence on the quality of the finished home. Winning site managers tell us it motivates them to give a little extra and to strive for ever-higher standards in the houses they build.

“Congratulations to all the 2023 Pride in the Job Regional and Seal of Excellence winners. They are an inspiration and should be very proud of the quality of new homes they are creating.”

A series of regional events are taking place throughout the UK to announce the Seal of Excellence and Regional Award winners and celebrate the achievements of the Quality Award recipients.

Ian will now go forward to compete for the ultimate prize in house building, the Pride in the Job Supreme Awards, which will be unveiled at a gala ceremony in London in January 2024.

Save over £2,000 in energy costs

A new report, ‘Watt a Save’, published last week by HBF, has found that buyers of new build properties will save over £2,000 per year in energy bills. Given the escalating home energy costs, that’s a substantial saving and a solid reason to purchase a new build home rather than an older property.

The report that analysed government data on the energy efficiency of new build and existing homes found:

  • New build homes save an average of £2,600 per property each year, with the average annual running costs for a new build totalling £1,500 compared to an average of £3,570 for older properties.
  • New build properties significantly reduce energy usage, with the average new build using approximately 100 kWh per m2 each year, compared to older properties requiring an average of 259kWh per m2.
  •  84% of new build homes were rated with an EPC of B or above, while less than 4% of existing dwellings reached the same standard.
  • Buyers of new homes are contributing to the country’s progression towards net zero, with each new build preventing 2.2 tonnes of carbon from being emitted each year.

Collectively, new build home buyers are saving over £500 million and reducing carbon emissions by over 500,000 tonnes a year!

Despite government action to keep a cap on energy prices, for now, bills are now significantly higher than just a few months ago. And those living in older and inefficient properties will be paying more than those living in a new build house. So if you’re considering buying your first property or moving house, it makes financial sense to buy a new build.

Our new build homes at Goodmores should have an EPC B rating, which is a high energy-efficiency score. Out homes will feature uPVC high-performance windows, high levels of insulation, energy-efficient boilers with smart heating controls and low-energy LED lighting to ensure maximum energy efficiency and thermal performance. If you’d like to enjoy the financial benefits of an energy-efficient home and want to know more about our homes at Goodmores, please get in touch.

Reasons why a new build is likely to be your ‘home sweet home’

Here’s our top five reasons why buying a new home versus an older is a wise choice.

  1. Peace of mind – New builds come with a number of protections in place including a standard 10-year structural NHBC Warranty, and in addition, some housebuilders offer additional reassurances. We also provide an additional two-year warranty.
  2. High-quality design and specification – our new homes are fitted with a range of high specification and modern features, thereby negating the need to allocate a pot of money for upgrades or repair work often associated with an older property. If reserved at the right point in the build cycle, homeowners may also be able to influence some aspects, such as the kitchen and bathroom.
  3. Energy efficiency – built with the most up-to-date features and materials, new homes are considerably more energy-efficient than older properties meaning energy bills can be up to 50% cheaper.
  4. Multiple ways to buy – many new homes can be purchased through a number of different schemes available which are exclusive to just new build properties – one example of this is the Help to Buy Equity Loan.
  5. Smoother and easier process – with no upward chain, purchasing a new build home is often a much easier process and we are committed to creating a reliable and excellent customer service experience, supporting our purchasers every step of the way.

It’s easy to see why new build homes are such a popular option – if you’re interested in living in beautiful East Devon, be sure to have a look at Goodmores, our scheme coming soon to Exmouth.
